Intro to Vedic Astronomy

12 Week Beginner Course

In this course students will learn the basics of Gaṇita Jyotiṣa. Astronomy (Gaṇita) is the branch of Vedic science which deals with celestial objects, space, and the physical universe as a whole. Students of Vedic Astrology have traditionally learned the fundamentals of astronomy first. In the old days when computers and calculators were not available, astrologers were able to make accurate birth charts because of their knowledge of astronomy. The primary goal of this course is to teach students everything they need to know to calculate the longitude of the rising sign for a given location at any time.

Students will learn

  • Components of the Celestial Sphere

  • How to calculate latitude and longitude

  • Sunrise and sunset calculations

  • Introduction to Vedic mathematics

  • Foundational concepts from Sūrya Siddhānta

  • Locating stars in the night sky

  • Calculating rising sign in a birth chart
