What is Praśna Mārga?
Praśna means question and mārga means path. Praśna Mārga is a classical Sanskrit text written in Southern India in the year 1650 AD. It is the profoundly deep teaching of the art and science of Vedic horary astrology and divination. The text also contains copious amounts of information on medical astrology, longevity calculations, natal horoscopy, transits, and much more. The modern text is divided into two parts of sixteen chapters each. The goal of this course is to cover all of the important stanzas in the first sixteen chapters of part one. This should take us about 8 months with holidays. Our last class will be on Thursday, November 20th.
What is praśna?
Praśna means question or query in Sanskrit and refers to the art and science of using astrology, numerology, phenomenology, breath patterns, behavioral patterns, and ancient Vedic divination techniques to interpret and properly answer any question posed by a client to an astrologer. The chart cast at the exact moment of first contact with or question posed to an astrologer by a client is called the Praśna Kundali. This chart tells the astrologer exactly where to focus in the client's birth chart because it is expressing the results of the actions of the client on the level of kriyamāṇa karma.
Why study praśna?
No astrologer can truly call themselves a competent astrologer without mastering the basic tenants of praśna. Learning praśna is learning how the archetypes of the planets communicate and interact with the physical environment through time. The goal of studying praśna to learn to read the language of the environment at all times by examining the sights, sounds, weather patterns, good and bad omens, behavioral and speech patterns of their clients, and the patterns of their own breath. Studying praśna is a spiritual journey in itself as the phenomenal human experience becomes a tool for constant communication with divine will.
Who can study praśna?
Anyone with a sincere interest in learning can study praśna. Practicing astrologers, students of Vedic, Hellenistic, or Western astrology, students of Ayurveda, and students of medical astrology will derive immense benefit from taking this course. That said, this is an intermediate level course and I recommend students have completed Science of Light Level 1 or the equivalent to get the most out of the experience. Students of non-Vedic backgrounds are more than welcome to join and are encouraged to bring outside views and diversity to the classroom. However, anyone can benefit from diving into such profound teachings at any stage in their journey and eager beginners are welcome to join if they have taken the Science of Light Intro Course.
What to prepare
As this is a new course I am teaching I am not sure when I will teach it again in the future. The goal is to cover the major components of the entire text as a whole over the next two years, but we will brush over redundant and outdated themes to save time here and there. We need 15-20 students to make it worth our time together as there are always a few who can’t make it online and we want to keep our class time together stimulating. I suggest getting the English translation of both Book 1 and 2 by B.V. Raman. We will study from Book 1 this year, but you should have Book 2 as a reference. I will also reference Muhurta concepts from Muhūrta Cintāmaṇi on a regular basis so be sure to get familiar with the basic tenants of electional astrology if you haven't yet taken my Muhurta course.
