12 Week Beginner Course
A beginner level course on the alphabet of the Sanskrit language and its pronunciation. Students build a strong foundation in reading, writing, and pronouncing all the sounds of Sanskrit. Sanskrit is a phonetic language so reading and writing are taught simultaneously. Students learn Devanāgarī script (Sanskrit) alongside IAST (International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration). Elliot Hocker leads the course — he holds a degree in Sanskrit from Sampurnānanda Sanskrit University in Varanasi, India where he studied traditional Sanskrit grammar for 7 years. He also holds a B.A. Shastri in Vedic astrology and minor in Sanskrit grammar from Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi.

The course is designed for beginner students who have a sincere interest in learning the Sanskrit language. This is the ideal course for students of Yoga, Ayurveda, Tantra, and Vedic Astrology. Students will benefit from studying several hours per week outside of class. Students will learn traditional Indian techniques for memorization and chanting, and some basic Sanskrit grammar. This course will lay a solid foundation for students who desire to or may already be studying other subjects in Sanskrit. After completing this course students will be confident writing and chanting the alphabet and reading basic words and sentences.

Class 1: Introduction, begin alphabet
Class 2: Vowels
Class 3: Consonants
Class 4: Semi-vowels & sibilants, consonants with vowel endings
Class 5: Consonants with vowel endings
Class 6: Auxiliary vowels: anusvāra and visarga
Class 7: Combined consonants
Class 8: Combined consonants: special rules for “r”
Class 9: Words
Class 10: Nouns, introduction to noun tables & their meanings
Class 11: Nouns, continued
Class 12: Verbs and easy sentences
